Much Better: A Playful Display Font for Websites

I was working on a hero section for a client's new online pottery shop. The product photos were gorgeous, earthy and handmade, but the headline "The Artisan's Touch" felt a bit formal in the usual sans serif I'd been using. I wanted something with more warmth and personality, something that felt crafted. I remembered Much Better, a font I'd recently purchased, and decided to swap it in. Immediately, the whole page’s mood shifted. That headline, now in Much Better’s friendly and rounded characters, suddenly looked inviting, approachable, and a little bit joyful. It was the perfect finishing touch.

The Personality Behind the Typeface

Much Better is, at its core, a cheerful and lively display font. Its defining characteristic is its set of "jolly curves," as the description aptly puts it. Each letterform is rounded and soft, with a gentle bounce that avoids being cartoonish or overly childish. It carries a modern, friendly sensibility. In the context of web design, this personality translates to a sense of approachability and warmth. It’s not a font that shouts; it smiles. For brands looking to convey creativity, handmade values, or a playful yet professional vibe—think creative agencies, indie product shops, children's activity platforms, or wellness coaches—Much Better can be a powerful asset.

Practical Web Design Applications

In practice, I found Much Better excels in specific, high-impact areas of a website. Its strength lies in creating focal points.

Readability and Technical Considerations

As a display font, Much Better is designed for short, impactful text. It’s not suitable for body copy, navigation menus, form labels, or any lengthy paragraphs. Its decorative nature means readability suffers at small sizes and on dense interfaces.

For web use specifically, you must consider:

Crafting a Cohesive Digital Identity with Font Pairing

A font like Much Better shines brightest when paired thoughtfully. It needs a clean, neutral counterpart to handle the bulk of your content.

My go-to pairing is a simple, geometric sans serif like Inter or Poppins for all body text, UI elements, and paragraphs. This creates a clear hierarchy: Much Better provides the personality and focal point, while the sans serif ensures effortless reading. For a more editorial feel, like for a blog header paired with Much Better, a classic serif like Merriweather can work well. The key is to let Much Better be the star for a few key elements and support it with a highly functional team player for everything else.

Before You Commit: Licensing and File Checks

If you're planning to use Much Better on a live website, a client's project, or within a digital product like a template or brand kit, always verify the commercial licensing. Most premium font licenses cover web use via webfont embedding. Confirm the license includes the formats you need (WOFF, WOFF2) and covers the intended scope—personal site, commercial site, or SaaS application. Also, check the font files for any useful alternates or ligatures that could add extra flair to your headlines, though for web use, standard character sets are often the primary concern.

Where Much Better Might Not Be the Fit

It’s just as important to know where a font won't work. Avoid using Much Better for:

Used strategically, Much Better injects a dose of carefully crafted optimism into a digital space. It’s a tool for making a website feel less generic and more human, which, in a world of templated designs, is truly much better.
